Activists allege severe abuse after being detained by Israeli military forces

Activists detained from aboard an international aid vessel bound for Gaza claimed they suffered severe abuse, including sexual assault, at the hands of the Israeli military. 이스라엘 정부에 의해 구금된 활동가들은 가자 지구로 향하는 국제 구호선에서 구금된 후 이스라엘 군대에 의해 심각한 학대와 성폭행을 당했다고 주장했다.

Activist Kim Ah-hyun said during a news conference held at the Green Hospital in Jungnang District, eastern Seoul, on Thursday, “The [detained] men were tortured with Tasers and the [detained] women were subjected to sexual harassment and sexual violence." 김아현 활동가는 목요일 서울 동부 정릉구 그린병원에서 열린 기자회견에서 "구금된 남성들은 테이저로 고문당했고 여성들은 성희롱과 성폭력의 대상이 되었다"고 말했다.

Kim was recently released by Israeli forces after being seized aboard a Gaza-bound aid flotilla in international waters off the Gaza Strip — which is currently a travel-restricted area for Koreans — on May 19. 김아현은 5월 19일 가자 지구 해상에서 한국인 출입 금지 구역인 국제 해상에서 가자 지구로 향하는 구호선에서 체포된 후 최근 이스라엘군에 의해 석방되었다.

Another activist, Kim Dong-hyeon, claimed, “I could hear people screaming in agony under torture, and it seemed like sexual abuse was happening repeatedly." 다른 활동가 김동현은 "고문하던 사람들이 고통에 소리치고, 성폭행이 반복적으로 일어나는 것 같았다"고 주장했다.

Kim Dong-hyeon said, “I was beaten countless times for five to 10 minutes that I lost count while my hands kept bleeding from being tied up in cable ties." 김동현은 "나는 수시로 구타를 당해 5분에서 10분 동안 계산을 할 수 없을 정도였고, 손이 케이블 타이에 묶여 피를 흘렸다"고 말했다.

Korean American activist Jonathan Victor Lee said, “I was beaten and shocked with electricity by armed soldiers inside a dark container, and my right rib was fractured.” 한국계 미국인 활동가 조나단 빅터 리는 "나는 무장한 군인들에 의해 어두운 컨테이너 안에서 구타를 당했고 전기 충격을 받았으며, 오른쪽 갈비뼈가 골절되었다"고 말했다.

The activists had boarded an international humanitarian aid vessel delivering supplies to Gaza before being seized by the Israeli military. 활동가들은 가자 지구로 공급물을 전달하는 국제 인도주의 구호선에 탑승한 후 이스라엘군에 의해 체포되었다.

The conference was also attended by activist groups such as the Korea Flotilla for Free Palestine (KFFP), the Association of Physicians for Humanism and Urgent Action by S.Korean Civil Society in Solidarity with Palestine. 이 회의에는 한국 팔레스타인 자유를 위한 함대(KFFP), 인도주의 의사 협회, 팔레스타인 연대 한국 시민 사회 긴급 행동 등 활동가 그룹도 참석했다.

Kim Ah-hyun and Kim Dong-hyeon returned to Korea on Friday, while Lee returned to Korea on Monday. 김아현과 김동현은 금요일에 한국으로 돌아왔고, 리는 월요일에 한국으로 돌아왔다.
